The Sad Pirate Doesn’t Like Bubbles

Yesterday, we had a little egg hunt with our playgroup. There were a few pieces of gum among the candy Hayley got in her eggs. I don’t allow Hayley to chew gum, so I took it. I decided to chew a piece myself as we were in the car. In an attempt to help her get over her fear of chewing gum bubbles, I blew one, then took the gum out of my mouth to show her there was nothing to be afraid of. She was okay until I blew one bubble and it popped. She hid her face and cried, “I don’t want to see that again!” I still don’t understand her fear, but I’m sure she’ll grow out of it someday.

This morning, Wade let me have a little extra sleep while he and Hayley went downstairs. A while later, he came up to take his shower, leaving Hayley watching a movie. I didn’t get up, assuming Hayley was fine, and with a fan and water running nearby, I couldn’t hear what was going on downstairs. When Wade got out of the shower, he went downstairs to check on Hayley. He found her crying in the bathroom. Apparently, she had pooped in the potty but then couldn’t wipe herself. She had called for me, but of course, I couldn’t hear her, so she had sat there crying. As Wade was helping her, she pointed to the toilet paper and said, “I used that to wipe my tears.” Talk about a guilt trip!

Today, Hayley and I spent some time dyeing and decorating eggs. For some reason, as I would ask her to do something, like stir the dye so the little tablet would dissolve, she would respond with an “Aye, aye!” I don’t know where she gets these things. When we were done with the eggs, she hugged me and said, “Thank you so much for coloring the eggs, Mama!” I used to like coloring eggs, so hopefully, Hayley and I can do it each Easter from now on.

As fanatical as I am about having things “just so” before I can fall asleep, I’m shocked that this is my kid.
