The Tooth of the Matter

Kate has a tooth!

I thought for several weeks now that she was teething so I’ve been feeling her gums every day, and today I felt a very tiny sharp thing. I haven’t been able to get her mouth open and her head still to look at it yet, but I can definitely feel it.

One funny thing is that Kate is just three days older than Hayley was when she got her first tooth.

Solid

We introduced “solid” food to Kate on Sunday for the first time. Of course, that initial batch of rice cereal isn’t much more than breastmilk in a bowl. But she did pretty well with eating from the spoon. Wade, Hayley, and I all took turns feeding her.

I’ve increased the thickness of the cereal a little each day since, and even though it still isn’t really thick, she seems to like it. She almost always sticks her fingers in her mouth after each spoonful and sucks on them as she swallows the cereal. Whatever works, I suppose.

Wade is anxious to start her on vegetables, so perhaps we’ll try those this weekend.

Flipper

This morning when I went into Kate’s bedroom for her 3 am feeding, I got a surprise.

It’s dark in her room, so normally I just reach down and feel for where she is in the crib, grab her under her arms and pick her up. Then I kiss her face. But this morning I kissed the back of her head…

She had flipped herself over at some point–the first time she has flipped from back to front.

Sit Up

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what day a baby sits up. It’s sort of a gradual process where little by little each day they make small improvements. But if I have to give a specific date to when Kate first “sat,” I will say Wednesday, April 4. That was the first day that her balance really seemed to be improving and she was able to right herself without falling when she started to lean backwards.

We have her sit several times each day so she will continue to get stronger and her balance will progress.

Next step, solid food! We’ll probably start introducing that within the next couple weeks…
