Last week, Kate had a couple of exciting things happen in one day.
First, I had to go to the bathroom and, as usual, one of the children followed me (you basically throw privacy out the window when you have small children, especially when the door to your bathroom won’t close properly). It was Kate this time, and she wanted to sit on her potty, too. I usually let her when she wants to but I don’t expect her to do anything. But this time, she did! She sat down and peed! Again, not expecting it to happen too often yet, but I praise her when she does it (twice now!).
Later on that day, the girls were coloring with colored pencils and I heard Kate talking as she was picking up pencils. It took me a minute to catch on to what she was saying–”Un, doo, fee, or, ive…” She was counting! I didn’t even know she knew how to count! Later I heard her saying “irteen, orteen” but I don’t think she actually counted that high. I’m sure she has no idea what she’s actually saying but it just shows how much a kid learns by pure absorption. I’ve been concentrating lately on getting Hayley to know her numbers and letters down pat that I haven’t even begun that stuff with Kate. But some of the books we read to her have counting and Hayley helps me count things a lot, so it seems that Kate just picked up on numbers that way. Kids are like little sponges.
Kate has some sort of cold or virus right now. She was sniffling with a runny nose and coughing a little bit today. Whatever she has, I hope she’s better by Wednesday–sick baby + 5-hour flight = NO FUN!
