Typo Problems

Posted on October 29th, 2005 in Technology by minter

My switch to Typo is currently on hold for two issues. One is a bug that seems to breaking category displays in my converted-from-MovableType blog. Clicking a category entry just brings you to a blank page. No movement yet on the bug.

The other one is that I appear to get a lot of zombie ruby processes hanging around on my FreeBSD 4 system, taking up a ton of CPU time. I’m running in “production” mode with FastCGI, so I can’t figure out what the problem is.

Hm.

Cardiac Canes

Another day, another two goal deficit in the 3rd erased for a win. This is becoming routine.

As I suspected, Coach Laviolette has built a team to excel in the new NHL. Speed and tenacity are a key, and that’s what we’ve got. The old Canes would take a shot and then fall back to a prevent defense. This team shoots, crashes the net, goes for rebounds, and provides relentless pressure. You never thought you’d see a Hurricanes team built for offense, yet here it is.

Go Canes!

Have A Little Class

Thanks to some cost-offsetting from the fine people at SkilTech, I’m going to be heading up to Northern Virginia next month to attend the Pragmatic Rails Studio Ruby on Rails class in Reston.

Should be an interesting couple of days, and let me know whether or not this framework is something I can devote time and energy to.

Type O Positive?

I’m considering switching this here blog from MovableType over to Typo. Maybe because it’s hip and stylish, maybe because it’s an excuse to play around with Rails, maybe because I want to be cool like Mark.

I’ve got a test installation up and running, and it imported my MT blog without a hitch. Now I just have to see if I can theme it up to resemble the rest of the site, and decide if I want to switch blogging packages for the first time in like three years.

Beatdown

If Carolina could play the Capitals every night, we’d win the Cup.

On a more realistic note, I’m pleased with the way the Hurricanes are playing. I think they’ve built a team that suits the New NHL, with speed and energy. And a big change is that this team doesn’t sit back and play the prevent defense on a lead – they get up by two, they want to be up by four.

Other teams have gotten equally better, so I don’t know if the playoffs are a lock this year, but it’s certainly a more exciting team to watch.

Under New Management

I’ve passed own ownership of the XML::Atom::SimpleFeed module to Aristotle Pagaltzis, who obviously knew a lot more about Atom and XML than I do. His first developer’s release of the improved module is now out on CPAN, so check it out.

Grow wings, little module, and fly away.

Two Escapees Captured In Virginia

James Bailey, 39, and 22-year-old Joshua McCaffity were located in a rural wooded area of Lunenburg County, Va., around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

When I was up in Kenbridge this past weekend, people were all jumpy over these guys. The county police were doing roadblocks and everything. So it’s good that it’s recaptured, though not surprising that this is the only way my home county makes the news.

Every Day She Writes The Book

It’s no secret that I’m a big ol’ geek. But I’m not the only one in my marriage. Behold, Holly’s latest literary creation – her take on Harry Potter Book 7: “Harry Potter and the House in the Hollow“. Fanfic is just as geeky as computer stuff, I think we can all agree.

Seriously, if you’re a fan of the Harry Potter universe like I am, she’s really doing a great job at writing a compelling Book 7 story. And Holly’s so talented that pretty much any creative task she touches turns out well. So read the chapters she has up so far, and be sure to leave a comment. She loves her some comments.
