Wolfpack Red!

As promised, The JMatt got me the video of the Public Service Announcement I filmed for Fox 50’s What Color Do You Bleed? campaign. So for those of you who can’t watch Fox 50, but would still like to see me say a line on TV, here you go.

And go buy a T-shirt, if you’re so inclined.

Guess Who’s Back, Back Again?

Yes, the whole family has been in the blogging doldrums for a few months. Is it the winter months? The children? Work? Hockey? All of the above?

I finally got tired of dealing with Typo, since the software seems to be mostly unmaintained these days, I’m not hacking on the Rails part, and the server that it sits on at SkilTech could use the extra CPU cycles. So I punted in favor of a fairly standard Wordpress install. Thanks to some scripts on the interwebs, migration was mostly painless. Mostly. So maybe having a new toy will inspire me to get back into the groove.

I had a kickass improv show at ComedyWorx on Saturday. One of those where everything falls into place, aside from a couple of odd technical errors on my part in the show intro. Packed house, which always helps too. And speaking of improv, big congratulations to Ted Hobgood for producing his 50th Cagematch show over at DSI. Ted’s an extremely creative guy, and he’s done great things with that format.

The Hurricanes made a big trade today, sending Cory Stillman and Mike Commodore to Ottawa for Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves. I’m really sad to see both players go, especially Commie, who was one of my favorites. But it’s probably a good thing. The Canes’ hockey doldrums have been even worse than my blogging ones, and both players were due to hit the free agent market this summer and probably command hefty pay raises. This move will either shake up the locker room and get the players back on track, or replace two players we may have lost with two who could stick around. And Corvo especially fills a need as an offensive defenseman who can score on the power play.

I’ll probably do a post soon recapping my Election 2008 predictions from a couple months back. The summary version: I did pretty well on the Democrats and not good at all on the Republicans. We’ll see if I can figure out why.

Ted Hobgood, I Salute You

The ever-talented Ted Hobgood made an offer the other day to photoshop a picture for someone. I responded with a link to Hayley’s pictures on Flickr and a list of her favorite cartoons, and he in turn replied with this:

Beautiful work. That’s going up in her room.

If you’re in downtown Raleigh Saturday night for the grand reopening of Fayetteville Street, stop by the Wachovia Building lobby between 6pm-9pm. I’ll be performing some improv with a group from ComedyWorx. I’m not exactly sure how the structure will work, but it’s bound to be fun.

Jersey City

A plan that was over a year in the making was finished today. A little over a year ago, I had the idea to work up custom ComedyWorx hockey jerseys, as a cool collector’s item and something fun to wear. I pitched it to the group, and the reception was lukewarm at best, so I dropped the plan.

This year, though, with the Hurricanes success, I brought up the project again, resolving to get enough interested people and make the order with whoever wanted to come on, even if I just ended up getting one for myself. I don’t know if it was hockey fever or the pitch I made, but I ended up with 12 orders, counting myself, which was more than I thought I’d get. I placed the order about a month ago, and the jerseys arrived in the mail today!

Big thanks to the guys at Big Stick hockey jersey company up in Toronto for putting the order together. They did a great job and were a pleasure to work with. So if you need hockey jerseys, I highly recommend them.

Look for these jerseys on fashionable improv performers everywhere.

Read it.

Read it again.

Then chill the hell out and enjoy improv.

Good Show, Old Bean

Posted on February 18th, 2006 in Improv by minter

Just got back from DSI playing a little ComedySportz.

The show, while probably not textbook “good improv,” was some of the most fun I’ve had in a long time. That’s because the players up on stage keyed in on three of the most important parts of a ComedySportz show – three parts that can fall through the cracks if you don’t pay attention – keeping the energy high, playing off the crowd, and having fun.

One moment in particular still has me grinning – Kit and Amanda were doing a Styles Replay, and one of the styles was “The Cosby Show.” In one of those great improv moments where everyone is on the same page, I (up in the booth as Mr. Voice) hit the Cosby Show theme music as soon as their replay scene started, and they wordlessly danced through the scene like the intro to The Cosby Show. Amazing.

Corey and Zach’s Hip Hop Movie Reviews were also quality – just the two of them in character playing off of each other. And Ross managed a hot (and weird) crowd – keeping their enthusiasm high while defusing some of the craziness.

Great show, great times.

The Mean Streets Of Carrboro

Holy hell.

That’s not supposed to happen around here. I may have to park in a different place when I go to DSI, since that’s right where I usually park. It is a pretty sketchy area, with a dark parking lot, train tracks, and plenty of vagrants wandering around.

Sheesh.
